EUROCON 2004 arranca dia 5 de Agosto

A cidade de Plovdiv na Bulgária prepara-se para acolher, entre os dias 5 e 8 de Agosto, mais uma edição da EUROCON. Para além da habitual entrega dos prémios EUROCON, pela Sociedade Europeia de Ficção Científica, planeiam-se palestras, debates (de entre os quais sobressai "Does Ursula K. Le Guin deserve a Nobel Prize for literature, and what we can do about it"), exibição de filmes, demonstrações e torneios de jogos.

O americano Robert Sheckley e o inglês Ian Watson estarão entre os convidados de honra para este ano.

    From 5 to 8 August 2004 the European Science Fiction Convention “Eurocon” in Plovdiv, Bulgaria took place. It was organized by Bulgarian SF&F organizations and clubs and held with support of Central European Initiative (CEI), Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria, Ministry of Education of Bulgaria, Ministry for Youth and Sports of Bulgaria, Plovdiv Municipality. Vice-prime minister of Bulgaria Plamen Panayotov provided official patronage. Bulgaria hosted the main European Science Fiction and Fantasy forum for the first time. Many professionals – writers, artists, publishers, journalists – as well as many SF&F fans from Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Denmark, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, USA and Ukraine took part in the forum. Lots of activities had been run: discussions, panels, exhibitions, presentations, movie premiers, and contests. During four days participants of the convention discussed the current state of SF&F in Europe, problems, missions and tasks SF&F culture on the continent facing.

    Guests of Honors were as follows: Robert Sheckley (SF writer, USA), Ian Watson (SF writer, UK), Andrzej Sapkowski (Fantasy writer, Poland), Roberto Quaglia (SF writer, Italy), Patrick Giger (curator of SF&F museum, Switzerland).

    One of the most important questions discussed was the current state of SF&F magazine market in Europe. On august 7, during a discussion, it was decided to organize “Plovdiv Group” – a group of European SF&F magazines with main aim to promote European cultural tradition in SF&F in the World.

    National delegations also selected winners of Eurocon Awards. The complete list is as follows:

    Best writer – Nick Perumov (Russia)
    Best artist – Otto Frello (Denmark)
    Best translator – Vladimir Bakanov (Russia)
    Best publisher – Minotauro (Spain)
    Best magazine – Science Fiction Reality (Realnost’ Fantastiki) (Ukraine)
    Best fanzine – Emitor (Serbia and Montenegro)
    Best promoter – Atanas Slavov (Bulgaria)
    Best author of dramatic presentation – Timur Bekmambetov and Sergey Lukianenko for their script to “Night Watch” movie.

    Special achievement award – web-zine Concatenation (UK)

    Encouragement Awards went to:

    Kirill Benediktov (Russia)
    Yana Polevaya (Moldova)
    Ivan Popov (Bulgaria)

    National delegations also voted for a hosting town of Eurocon in 2006. Two bids were announced – Kiev, Ukraine and Moscow, Russia. Expected bid of Budapest (Hungary) was not announced. Kiev won the bid, and Eurocon in 2006 will be held in Ukraine.

    By ESFS constitution Eurocon should be held one year in Western Europe and another in Eastern Europe. There are three prospective bids expected for the year 2007 – Ireland, Denmark and Sweden. The hosting site for Eurocon-2007 will be selected in Eurocon-2005 (combined with 63-rd Worldcon) in Glasgow, Scotland.

    Together with Eurocon two other conventions were held – Bulgacon (Bulgarian National SF&F Convention) and GameCon. Local and international mass-media gave the convention much attention. President of Bulgaria Georgy Pyrvanov sent a greeting letter to participants of the Eurocon.

    EUROCON – European Science Fiction Convention – is held every year in various countries of Europe. The first Eurocon was held in 1972 in Trieste, Italy. Till 1982 Eurocons were held biyearly. Since 1983 Eurocon is held annually (but a few exception). At that convention European Science Fiction Society (ESFS) was created.

    In 2005 the European Science Fiction Convention Eurocon will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, combined with the 63-rd World Science Fiction Convention Worldcon.

    In 2006 Eurocon will be held in Kiev, Ukraine.
